Battery box roughed together. I will finish it of properly later or, for now it is functional.
Themoulding has been added to the rear of the main feet to hide the motor brackets. It is hard to see from the photos but on the whole it looks fine. One other thing that I did have to re-shape was the skirt. For some reason I got the side pannels wrong. The angle was to steep, somehow I managed to get this wrong but it only became apparent when everything was fitted together on the test run. Anyway, old ones taken of and new ones fitted at the correct angle.
After all the messing around with getting everything to fit together correctly, atlast it all works. The feet now stay locked in position and do not tip and I have correct radio control. Even at 12v the motors are more than powerful enough on a noral road surface. I will get a video loaded soon showing the movement. Battery life seems ok , In the twenty mins I drove the droid around nothing fell off or broke.Even after hitting a wall at low speed the front foot survived, I am glad I reinforced it with MDF and metal strips.
The last image show how it has all been stripped down and re painted and the work done on the back of the main feet to cover the motor bracket hole.
Hopefully I will soon be ready for top coat painting. I still have not decided if I will spend laods of money on spray paints or go for the hand painted approach?
I started on the motor electrics board tonight. Each electrical system will have its own dedicated board making it easier to work on a dn upgrade when needed.
The main motor board has the Sabretooth dual25A speed control, reciever, fusebox, switches and multiblock fitted. Each motor and main battery is protected by fuses, 20 and 25A seems to do the trick. One set of multi blocks allows the motor connection and the other the batteries, either 24v or 12v config.
I decided to assemble the droid and test all the motors and electrics. After an hour or two fitting the feet to the legs and getting them onto the body I was ready to see if I had power and control. This was the point that everything went wrong. Here is the list of all the thing that failed:
The front foot kept tipping.
The main feet kept tipping
The battery boxes are not straight and the gap between the ankle and battery box is to large
The radio does not control the motors correctly.
24v is a joke unless I want a droid that can wheelie

After a depressing couple of hours of removing the battery boxes and getting a better fit I started work on the center foot. The problem is that I can not tighten up the bolts enough to stop the feet tipping. The solution has to be small wood blocks placed accordingly to stop the feet tipping, and heavier bushes placed on the pivots of each foot. You can see in the pictures that the small blocks are not really that noticable.
As for the control or lack of it I eventually found the problem. Working for hours in a cold garage does not help with diagnosing wiring faults. Can you spot the stupid wiring mistake on the board above. It took me two hours to find it. Now everthing drives perfectly.

More work on details. Shoulder hubs sanded and covered in alluminium tape. It gives a great look and makes the units look like they are cut from solid alloy when fitted. The ankle details ahve been re-sanded and ready for the top coat of paint. The wood ankle brackets have been binned and replace with 3mm alloy , which should look much better. Braided hose also puchased and ready to bronze.
It may not be authentic but it will look fine when finished. The hidden T-nuts have also been fitted to the legs under the shoulders so the legs can be bolted to the body without having to remove the shoulder or booster assemblies.Looking ok at the moment, we will see when it is all assembled which is next.
Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-67895980217798145602010-02-07T11:53:00.000-08:002010-02-07T12:04:09.217-08:00R6: Time to start work on the details

The details always seem to take ages to work on. Atleast I can work on them inside out of the cold garage. I had another go with the router to cut out the shoulder details and I think I am getting better. The ankle cylinder have also been sanded down and the groves cut better.

Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-40625738474582805442010-02-02T12:23:00.000-08:002010-02-02T12:30:32.787-08:00R6: Body begins

I decided after all the work I have been doing on the feet and legs to give the body some attention. The frame was basically already completed so it was just a matter of rapping around the 3mm Hardboard to form the skin. It had already been pre curved using a tried and tested system so it was very easy to offer up to the frame and cut the should hub circles out. The Skin will need priming and filling to make it ready for all the detailing and cutouts. I decided to fit the legs to check that everything still lines up and it all seems fine. I am going to fit a basic shock absorber system to the center foot which will be very easy to do since I had already anticipated I would add something like this when I designed the top of the center leg and cutout in the skirt.

Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-44501648705740169482010-02-02T12:22:00.000-08:002010-02-02T12:43:30.744-08:00R6: Starting to come together

I have now found myself working on everything at the same time. I found some plactic tubes that where exactly the correct size for the cyclinders so I started to work on these thinking they would be very quick. I have had some problems though cutting the groves in the plastic as it looks messy when scored. I will now have to finish these of with sanding which will takes ages to get the finish I want. The end caps in the cylinders will be made of soft wood and will be carved and sanded.
I have started to layout all the parts on the legs to check everything lines up and because I have been accurate with all the measurements everything does.
I am also adding details to the main feet now I have worked out how to mount the motor brackets securely. I do have a problem with the motor brackets sticking out of the rear of the battery boxes slightly but to cover this I am going to modify the back of the foot and use a bit of artistic licence.
The metal brackets took ages to fabricate but now the legs attach to the feet securely I can move on working out how to mount the outer shells to the motor mounts.I have also finished the front curve on the main feet and added the battery boxes. The side details are also being built from card, filled and painted.I do have a problem with the motor mount sticking out at the back of the foot so I will have to solve this problem later. The feet are now startimng to look much better and are very strong with the extra internal reinforcement.

Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-76560169042981199252010-02-02T12:19:00.000-08:002010-02-02T12:47:10.514-08:00R6:Center foot

I enjoyed making the center foot on my R2 unit and this one has been the same. I still have to add a bit more detail around the skirt of the foot and create a pannel to cover the ankle bolt hole, but on the whole the foot in nearly their. It is heavily reinforced inside as I found that the R2 foot I made before got broken easily with people either standing on it or it hitting things. This one is much, much stronger. I have also gone with a much larger center wheel with better bearings which should cope with most surfaces.
It is all the little details that take so long to finish.I am really pleased with the ankle details and once finished and painted should look great. I used plastic tubes for the cylinders but have had real difficulty cutting the detailing into them as the plastic just scuffs up. I may have to remake these either in wood or see if I can get them made up at work out of metal.

Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-78935885452842387882010-02-02T12:16:00.000-08:002010-02-02T12:57:43.386-08:00R6: Boosters and ankle details

More work on the Boosters and cutting the ankle details out of MDF.
The booster covers like everything else will be primed with textured massonary paint. This may seem alittle strange but this is fantastic paint as it acts like a filler and primer in one. When sanded down the results are brilliant and provide a greats surface to apply the top coat.

Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-88523972764351640492010-02-02T12:14:00.000-08:002010-02-02T12:35:05.997-08:00R6: Booster covers

I took ages deciding how I was going to make these, either in wood or in card and in the end went for the card option. I decided this as I knew I could get much more detail. Once the filler is applied and sanded the results are great and will look just as good as any carved wood version. The thing with working with card is that the Booster covers took absolutely ages to get right but I am pleased with the results. I am still not sure how to attach them to the legs as they will need to be removable.

Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-40731648797282869622010-01-26T10:30:00.000-08:002010-01-26T10:32:51.271-08:00R6: More work on the legs

Did a bit more work on the legs tonight and added the ankles units. Again they are made from 3mm hardboard and then covered in filler to give the nice smooth surface. They still need to be sanded down and finished but the legs are now starting to look much better.
I decided to fit the drive units into the feet tonight as well but when I inspected the feet in more detail I noticed that the glue I used to stick them together had not worked very well, infact they fell apart. I then had to spend about half and hour removing the old glue and resticking them with much better glue. They have also been reinforced inside and are now ready to mount the drive units and recieve the battery boxes, still to be made.
I couldnt resist and had to bolt on the legs and feet, power up the motors and see if all this hard work was worth it. YES, it moves, it is alive. There is a great deal of work still to do but I now feel so good knowing that the drive system will work and that the motors are powerful enough to move what is becoming a very heavy R6.I will have to work out a system to lock the ankle joints as under power they currently pivot. These motors have a great deal of torque and put the ankles under a lot of turning force.
I will try and get the body skins drawn out over then ext few days and do a bit more work on the legs.
I really wanted to get some work done on the ankles this weekend but now it looks like this will not happen. I am not very good at working with metal, and if only I could weld this whole process would have taken less time.
The brackets were made up out of some heavy steel square section tubing I had. After a great deal on angle grinding and drilling I eventually have a bracket to fix the feet to the legs and after a test fitting everything seems to line up perfect.

Podpadstudioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02101047373810289618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343048738791877294.post-15342995953650468782010-01-24T10:36:00.000-08:002010-01-24T10:36:37.039-08:00R6: Main feet and Power

The lower MDF skirts have been fitted and all three feet have their top skins.

Making this skirt took ages. Why does something so simple have to be so complex. Why is every angle calculated from a different center point, why????? After a great deal of bad language I have something that looks correct and is as accurate as I can get it. The skirt is made from some very heavy coated cardboard, about 2mm in thickness. It is easy to curve and once painted will be very strong. The rest is MDF of varying thickness. It now needs to be filled and sanded to give it a more authentic look.

The body construction is very simple. The skin material is quite thick at 3mm and very strong so the frame does not need to offer as much support. Using thinner skins would mean the frame would have to be much more complex so I decide to go with the thivker skin material.

The head rota is the same system I used in my R2 and certain works very well.

The 6" Lasy susan is mounted centrally on a cross brace. On top of this is a cut circle of MDF. It is the edge of this cirlce that will come into contact with the drive wheel attached to the head motor.Fixed on top of the MDF cirlce will be the base circle for the head. The reason I go with this head drive system is that I know it works and it is also much cheaper than spending about £70 on the larger rota ring that some other builders use. The Lasy susan I use cost £2.50.The final effect of the head rotating will be identical which ever system is used, one just costs alot less. Control of the head rotation will be via a simple electronic speed control attached to a £10 cordless screwdriver motor from Argos. It spins the head a a good speed and seems very reliable, (still working in my R2)
Second weekend on the build. I did not get much done at all during the week due to being so busy at work.
What I did get done was some more work on the plans.I created foot templates and got my head around all the angles of the skirt construction.Earlier on in the week I ordered the E-Scooters of ebay, which have just arrived. I will be happy to get back out in the garage and do some more work on the R6, as the weather has been very cold each evening and has kept me inside.
I had always intended to work on the legs first, getting them almost complete, then move onto the feet then body. That plan has gone out of the window and I know seem to be working on everything at the same time.
The main structure of the legs has now been done, not including the booster covers, ankles or any details. I decided to get the shoulder hubs cut and drilled and test fit them to the body pannels that will hold them. I am going to use a similar body design to the last R2 and mount the legs in the same way. This time I want to make sure my measurements are accurate, so there will not be any problems with the R6 going in a straight line.
I initially had a problem with needing to have the R6 sit up right to make the projector work correctly. I have now sorted out this problem. The R6 will stay in three leg mode and the projector will move.
